How does the snow sensor work?

November 20, 2024

An the NOAA Weather Prediction Center have forecasted an atmospheric river and bomb cyclone to strike the West Coast, heavy snow is expected in higher elevations. CNN reports that multiple feet of snow are possible by the end of the week in Northern California mountains.

We were recently asked to explain how the USH-9 snow depth sensor works.

What is ultrasonic technology?

This instrument is designed to be mounted above ground, avoiding objects than can interfere with it. Ultrasonic technology uses sound (sonic) waves at the 50kHZ frequency, higher than the range of human hearing (ultra). Waves are emitted as pulses at a beam angle of 12 degrees and return as echoes. The sensor measures the time period between the emission and echo. The total signals are processed with digital filtering and computing to detect snow cover and provide accurate, precise snow depth measurements up to 10 m (33 ft).

How is temperature taken into account?

An external temperature sensor enables the device to compensate for temperature effects on the measurements. This model also discerns between rainfall and snowfall. It is also capable of determining snowfall intensity.

The IP64 rating for harsh weather environments includes anodized aluminum to ensure high resistance to weathering. The sensor has a temperature measurement range between -40°C (-40°F) to +60°C (+140°F).

We invite you to discover other snow measurement sensors.
